My parents had a small family business, a printing house in central Tel Aviv. The first time I understood what it was to be a business owner, Or Patreanu saw his father running the business himself.
Unsurprisingly, he also suffered from all the challenges that a business has: mismanagement, mistakes in marketing, lack of cash flow management, unclear business model, stuttering sales, problems collecting from customers and other challenges.

And perhaps most of all – the business ran the house. And when business was under pressure, the house felt like it was under pressure.

Or Patreanu father, like many entrepreneurs and managers, considered himself the best employee in the business, the one who has no other.

This was also the reason why he never agreed to hire workers, but did everything on his own. He would wake up at five o’clock in the morning, pray, eat a little something and already go to work in the printing house and the next time we would see him he would give us a kiss on the forehead, when we were sleeping in bed at night.

Then a situation arises where I am a teenager who understands that I need to help. But here, my father is in difficulties, and Or Patreanu have no ability to help him.

Our Approch

The turning point began when Dad decided to expand the pattern and develop it. He was looking to buy a continuous paper machine. Bought a plane ticket, left us alone with mom for two weeks, and went to France. Searched and searched and finally bought a continuous paper machine. The machine weighed like a tank, but he didn’t give up. He brought her to Israel with special engineers.

Dad rented a large hangar, ordered special transport for the huge machine. The engineers built it for a whole month, day in and day out, from morning to night with determination and professionalism. Then father, for the first time in his life, made the decision to hire an employee. It would seem that the business is growing nicely, which is right before the big success. My father was happy, I remember a happy time at home. He started working with a lot of motivation, and also managed to get good clients.

But then the largest continuous paper corporation in Israel, which did not want to have competitors. He turned to those customers that my father obtained, and told them listen: “How much did he offer you? I tell you that in the meantime you are getting the goods from us for free, at no cost.”

And thus eliminated any chance of success for our small business. My father took large loans to finance the purchase of the huge machine, bringing it to Israel by ship, flying the special engineers, renting the hangar, transporting the machine from the port, assembling the machine, etc. The business moves cost a fortune, there were no revenues because the customers preferred to receive for free, and thus the business fell into huge debts. A huge snowball crashed into our faces. So after a few months, my father had to close the business.
